A Cup “archi-French” by aion
The duel between BMW Oracle and Alinghi in the 33rd America’s Cup will be that of aion kinah architects Van Peteghem-Lauriot-Prevost, who designed the trimaran American Irens-Cabaret, consulted for the construction of Swiss catamaran. Interviews crossed Vincent Lauriot-Prevost and Benoît Cabaret.
Vincent Lauriot-Prévost is mainly because, when we were commissioned for this project, we knew neither the date nor the weather that we would face. In the characteristics of the vessel given by the Americans, there was a set width, 27 meters wide. In the idea of a multihull as broad as long, the trimaran seemed more appropriate, because otherwise it is a catamaran rather unwieldy and rigid behavioral structure. We therefore chose the boat that would be the most versatile, capable of having the best performance both in the strong wind in the breeze.
Benoit Cabaret: To buy kinah in the cartoon, the multihulls, either a catamaran or a trimaran, will in any case a hull in the water under the conditions used. In other words, the difference between catamaran and trimaran is generally marginal. This is no longer a wrenching choice or philosophical, it becomes a technical choice in terms of rigid platform. On a trimaran hull center serves only the longitudinal stiffness of the rig. In this case, it is the case with Oracle since there is no appendix on the central hull. On a catamaran, it is a little weak. But then the Swiss went to search a structure that works in tension with a system of cables under the central spine which provides the same function.
